Pete Townshend's Broken Guitar, Margot's Tutu to Show at V&A

By Farah Nayeri

Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- A guitar that rock star Pete Townshend smashed on stage and a tutu worn in "Swan Lake'' by ballerina Margot Fonteyn will go on show at London's Victoria & Albert Museum from March, the V&A said in a press release.

The V&A's new Theatre and Performance Galleries will house the collections of London's defunct Theatre Museum, which closed last year. Displays include a first folio of Shakespeare's plays, dated 1623; Laurence Olivier's "Oedipus Rex'' stage costume from 1945; and a jumpsuit that Mick Jagger wore on tour in 1972.

Also opening next year: the V&A's Medieval and Renaissance Galleries -- 10 rooms containing Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks and Donatello sculptures in a survey of European art and design from the Roman Empire's collapse to the late Renaissance. Opening in November 2009, the galleries will cost 30 million pounds ($46.3 million), of which 9.75 million pounds are coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

"For the first time, these new galleries present the V&A's medieval and Renaissance treasures as continuous displays, telling the story of European art and design from the year 300 to 1600,'' said V&A Director Mark Jones in the press release.

Also opening next year are new ceramics galleries showing some 3,000 objects from all ages.
