The Who will be the toast of Hunter winery

IN what is set to be one of the biggest rock events to ever hit the Hunter, legendary British band The Who has been confirmed for an outdoor concert at Pokolbin in March.
Promoter Andrew McManus announced yesterday that the group, fronted by singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townsend, would perform at Hope Estate winery on Saturday, March 28.
The show is expected to eclipse the Eric Clapton concert that will launch the winery's new purpose built 19,000-seat amphitheatre on March 7.
Tickets for the concert will range from $99 to $159 and go on sale through Ticketmaster on Friday, December 19.
Formed in 1964, The Who went on to sell more than 100 million albums and penned songs that became anthems for an age including My Generation, Substitute, Pinball Wizard and Won't Get Fooled Again.
Alongside a string of hit singles they expanded the boundaries of rock with pioneering concept albums and rock operas Tommy (1969) and Quadrophenia(1973).
The Who's aggressive and theatrical stage presence, typified by the band regularly destroying their stage equipment and Townsend's trademark guitar windmills, saw them hailed as one of rock's greatest and most exciting live acts.
The line-up for the Hunter show will include drummer Zac Starkey, son of Beatles' drummer Ringo Star.
Support acts for the night are Californian rockers Counting Crows and Melbourne outfit Dallas Crane.
