HEY! BO DIDDLEY
Radio 2, 9.30pm
Dum-da-dum-dum-dumdum. Yes, Bo Diddley (born Ellas Bates in 1928), that has been your trademark riff, lo, these many years. Somehow you have managed to parlay it and a talent for autobiographical lyrics into a 50-year career, with nought but a box-shaped guitar to give it added spice. Extraordinary. We salute you well, Roger Daltrey of The Who does, over the next three weeks. If that seems a long time to spend reminiscing over a single rhythm, albeit a very good one, consider this that beat has come in handy for a lot of artists stuck for a hook over the years, from Buddy Holly to the Kinks to the Smiths to U2. Not to mention The Who (Magic Bus you must remember).
