> But if you haven't seen any 2004 shows
"saw a DVD copy of their performance in yokohama. and also saw clips from
their IOW performance. hate to say it, but I thought it stunk. seemed like the
energy was gone and pete and roger were trying a bit too hard."
Yokahama was weird because of the audience. Japanese crowds are historically very subdued, and it probably had an effect of Pete and Rog. It's probably why Pete smashed his guitar (then auctioned it off as the last guitar he will ever smash and donated the funds raised to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts- Thanks, Pete, we down here appreciate it).
The limited shots I've seen of IOW, and the CD I have of it, don't reflect the "stench" to which you refer. While I wasn't at either Yok or IOW, I was at Shoreline (CA) and Hollywood Bowl in 2004, and those shows were awfully good. Shoreline was Pete's night, and put on the best individual performance I have seen in my short time witnessing The Who live (since CFNYC in 2001). Roger was very workmanlike and not physically into the show. Hollywood Bowl, however, was a different story. Best show I've seen from them post-John, with Pete on fire and Roger's voice in good shape, which probably led to his increased participation in the physical show. The CD I have of this show confirmed all my impressions.
