By DARRYL STERDAN

ALL THE BEST COWBOYS HAVE CHINESE EYES
YEAR: 1982
Sun Rating: 3 out of 5
STORY: The title has something to do with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. If only the music were that macho. Instead, this is Pete at his silliest and most self-indulgent, trying to look hip in his shoulder-padded New Romantic duds and getting artsy with moody tunes, banks of synths, spoken-word segments and a freeze-dried ambience.
OLD FAVES: Stardom in Action is as close as it gets to rockin', but the 5/4 new wave of Face Dances, the midtempo Slit Skirts and his lush cover of North Country Girl are highlights.
NEW STUFF: Three cuts, including one rocker -- Dance it Away -- that tops most of the original disc.

THE IRON MAN: THE MUSICAL
YEAR: 1989
Sun Rating: 2 out of 5
STORY: Townshend takes another stab at rock opera by adapting Ted Hughes' fable about a mechanical giant. But the all-star cast -- including Roger Daltrey, John Lee Hooker, Nina Simone and John Entwistle -- can't compensate for the the preposterous, overblown tunes.
OLD FAVES: Unless you're a Who nut, you likely haven't heard this. And you haven't missed much. Though the electro-blues of I Eat Heavy Metal is cool just for Hooker's mumbling growl.
NEW STUFF: One demo, one alternate take, one extended version.

PSYCHODERELICT LIVE IN NEW YORK (DVD)
YEAR: 1993
Sun Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5
STORY: Townshend transforms his ambitious radio-style drama into a more ambitious multi-media production, with actors delivering their lines in front of a rock band. Sounds awful -- but it actually brings the material to life. For those who aren't convinced, Pete bookends the rock opera with 13 classics.
OLD FAVES: Pinball Wizard, Rough Boys, Behind Blue Eyes and Magic Bus are all in the 150-minute set.
NEW STUFF: A 20-minute interview conducted last fall.
