TOWN 'MODS' SCOOTER IN TO MARK CULT FILM
HORNCASTLE scooter fans' latest trip to the seaside was captured on camera for a small screen broadcast about big screen cult film Quadrophenia.
Andy Robinson was among the riders who got out their prized Vespas and Lambrettas to take part in a BBC Midlands documentary about the famous 70s film.
"Several members of Generations Scooter Club in Horncastle went to Skegness for the filming," said Andy, 52, who runs Robinsons of Horncastle television and radio shop in the High Street.
"We've got about 40 members in Generations and, as the name suggests, we have all ages from 16 to 70. There's a huge interest in scooters now and it seems to keep growing."
Tapping into that growing interest, the Inside Out programme makers featured the 'mods' riding through Skegness - the resort which was the inspiration for Quadrophenia back in the 70s, even though the story was set in Brighton.
Alan Fletcher, script consultant on the film, was there, too, to help recreate some of the scenes.
Alan, who also wrote the novel which accompanied the film, said: "I came to Skegness every bank holiday from 1964-66. I drew from my experiences.
"I think it was just the general ethos at the time. The things which were happening in Brighton were happening all along the coast."
Alan said he was delighted to see riders from Horncastle and Newark, some of whom he knew from his days among the Mods, turn up for the shoot.
He said: "It was about the scooters, the music, the clothes and the atmosphere. There's still a huge interest in mod culture now."
* Horncastle's Generations Scooter Club meets every Wednesday evening in the summer in the Market Place. From Christmas members will also meet up on alternate Wednesday evenings at the Fighting Cocks. New members are always welcomed.
