I thought they always used backing tracks for the song live.  The rehearsal 
video from '79 on the 30 yrs. DVD shows them having trouble singing it live.

It's nothing new, the chorus of BellBoy was canned on the '73-4 shows.  It's 
obvious on the Charlton video.
