Pete press bashing

Pete goes after the press again in a new diary entry:

This time for a Times (U.K.) commentary by Jasper
Gerard. I've reprinted J.G.'s comments below so you
can tell what Pete's reacting to:

It is the latest must-have accessory for a celebrity:
an abusive relative. Just as you now seem to need a
blonde girlfriend to get into the England squad, so
you need a psychotic relation to get publicity. First
Teri Hatcher wept on telly about the uncle who
sexually abused her. Alas she waited until the uncle
had been arrested, having abused goodness knows how
many other innocents, before "coming forward". Now
Jerry Hall has, in the parlance of such things,
"spoken out" against her violent — late — father.

What next: Billie Piper claiming she was abducted by a
gang of sexually voracious Daleks? If talking about
abuse is therapeutic then great, and if it prompts
other victims to denounce their abusers, better still.

People do, after all, seek to emulate celebrities in
extraordinary ways: I ran into Jordan the other day
and she said a 14-year-old girl had told her she was
going to buy breasts just like hers (which Jordan, by
the way, seemed to take as a 34FF compliment).

But aren't such celebrity confessionals just a little
yucky: effectively saying, hey, look what little ol'
me has overcome? It is as if the "my drugs hell"
exposé has lost potency, so celebrities offer "my
abuse hell". Ladies, if you want accessories, stick to
Ugg boots.
