Paul,
I hope there are no hard feelings between us. I also hope you do find a way
to preserve the list. It meant a lot to me, especially when I first joined
after Pete's arrest. I'm watching the archives to see what happens.
A big part of the reason I left was that I disagreed with your decision on
my request so strongly that I knew I'd have been a disruption if I stayed.
I didn't want to stick around and ruin it for the rest of the crowd, while
making myself agravated in the process. I thought it was best for me *and*
best for the list.
If you're truly interested in trying to make it work again and don't mind
input from an "outsider", here it is...
I think if the moderator doesn't want people to argue their differences,
he's got to be willing to take a public stand. You've always handled
off-topic arguments well. Issue a cease and decist, then ban people if they
don't. When it's a disagreement on list rules, you could ask each party to
make their case privately, then issue a final decision. Failure to respect
that decision would be grounds for dismissal.
I think you mostly did a fine job of deciding when someone needed to leave,
but perhaps the process needs to be transparent. Some kind of official
warning system, so that no one could get blind sided. As someone who full
well knew Kevin's faults, I was totally shocked when you bounced him.
I don't know what anyone can do to help share the load, but if you have any
ideas, I'm sure you'd get plenty of offers.
Whatever happens, I wish you the best.
Jim
