"penetrates" the body in a way that visual communication doesn't.
The physical sound waves move the eardrum but don't penetrate it,
causing electric nerve impulses to go from there to the brain.

There's a rumble that comes from a good bass, though, that does seem to 
penetrate.  Plus, I really dislike the impact of really sharp drum sounds 
that are miked to the point they're painful--not to the ears, but more in 
the chest.

Zak's drums are perfect, BTW.
