David, I'm not sure hymns is a good analogy. That case is about the same as
The Who's audience singing along with "Pinball Wizard" or "Who Are You,"
which Pete already experiences every time he goes out with The Who. The
Method will allow a modicum of audience participation in (hopefully) some
grand composition, but "sitting" still feels very far removed from the final
product.
I know Pete is dedicated to the idea of connection through The Grid, but as
I understand this, it's going to be very impersonal. Sitters will input
data that will be considered and expanded by one or two
composers/programmers Pete has cooperating on the project. The end result
may be a grand art project that everyone can have the satisfaction of
contributing to, but it's still not like playing along in real time. I'm
wondering if Pete couldn't come up with some push-button arrangement (like
audience voting technology) where individuals could inject their own theme
at a particular signal. This might be a bit freeform and somewhat messier,
but I'm sure there would be a much greater feeling of cooperation and
"joining together with the band." What do you think?
