WHO FANS BUY A SHARE OF HISTORY
10:30 - 29 June 2006

Who fans flocked to Andoversford to snap up a piece of
bass guitarist John Entwistle's past. Furniture which
had graced his home went up for auction at the
Frogmill Hotel and raised more than £7,000.

The new owners of Quarwood, the Cotswold mansion which
was the star's home for 27 years, decided they don't
much like the rocker's taste.

They want to return the 50-bedroom Victorian manor to
a 1930s style. They ripped out what's left of the
guitarist's personalised decor and put it up to the
highest bidder.

More than 300 people put in bids on the 23 lots, which
included 14 Gothic chairs and a certificate from the
Hard Rock Cafe in London signed by Mr Entwistle, who
died in June 2002.

Devoted collectors made an early appearance as the
hotel doors opened at 7.30am.

The most exciting piece to go under the hammer was a
panelled room commissioned, designed and ordered for
his master bedroom, which included a padded headboard.

Buyer Tina Ashington, from Whittington, fell in love
with it at a viewing on Monday but panicked when she
realised she could not attend the auction.

Putting in a sealed bid the day before she kept her
fingers crossed and was ecstatic to hear she would be
taking it home.

She said: "I'm a Who fan but more than that I love
Gothic furniture.

"My house is already full so it will go into storage
until I can find space for it. I'm over the moon I got
it."

Martin Lambert, fine art auctioneer and valuer at
Humberts Fine Art, said it had been a successful day.

"We had a lot of commissioned bids from people who
couldn't attend and interest from overseas, mainly
fans from the States.

"These items come up rarely and people were determined
to have them as John Entwistle was one of the best
bass players in the world. It was interesting to see
so many collectors rather than fans turn up.

"The pieces were unique and reflected John's style. I
think that's what makes them so collectable and the
fact that they're in excellent condition."
