Who recreate a legendary gig at uni
(Saturday June 17, 2006 06:46 PM)
The Who honoured a "legendary concert venue" as they
kicked off their 2006 world tour with a recreation of
their famous 1970 Leeds University gig which spawned
one of greatest live albums of all time.
The concert 36 years ago has found its way into rock
folklore and the Live At Leeds album taped on the
night is still considered the definitive live
recording.
Q Magazine recently voted it the best live album of
all time.
Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey unveiled a blue
plaque at the Leeds students' union refectory, where
the gig took place, before launching their new world
tour there.
Thousands of fans queued overnight for tickets to the
2,100 capacity event which will be one of the band's
most intimate shows in years.
Tickets sold out within half an hour, and more than
100 people waited for more than two hours to see the
civic trust plaque unveiled.
After pulling back the curtain, Daltrey saluted fans
in the crowd. "Thank you Leeds," he said. "Without
those unions to play - the venues were thin on the
ground, so my big thanks to Leeds, and the other
unions, for being there."
Broadcaster Andy Kershaw, who was the entertainments
secretary at the university in the early 1980s, said
he had the idea for the concert when the decision was
taken to put up a plaque to commemorate the gig.
The 1970 gig came after The Who's triumphant
appearance at Woodstock and included the last complete
live performance of the rock opera Tommy.
The Live At Leeds album sold millions around the
world. Kershaw said it was a "benchmark concert" which
"defined an era".
