Clearly lots of people yearn after God, regardless of whether he's real or 
not, so Pete is addressing a common concern of humanity to talk about 
mortality and the afterlife.  I'd say John's death is what's put him into 
this mood.  Did I mention that I think this mini-opera is his tribute to 
John?
