There was another adjustment Quinn had to make, one
that never occurred to Townshend when he wrote "Tommy"
in the '60s: In the age of Xbox, kids don't know what
a pinball machine is.

"Some of them had never played a pinball machine and
we have to show them how to play it," for the big
production number "Pinball Wizard," says Quinn.

The two boys who alternate in the role of Tommy at age
6 know they've played pinball — they think.

"I don't think I have," says Michael Herwitz, 10, from
Irvington. "Yeah, I have. I played a Simpsons pinball
machine a couple of months ago with my cousin."

Jack Tartaglia, 9, from Mohegan Lake, says when his
brother plays basketball at Brewster Sports Center,
Jack kills time at the arcade. "I haven't been there
awhile, but I think I played one with a donkey or a
dog or something."
