It's been mentioned here. This is the Independent Artist Company, the same
site that held the contest for #1 song Rachel and Pete won just a while
back. Anyone who plays music and has a song recorded can use the site to
post their song, watch it rise or fall on the charts, have it added to
"radio stations" for play and sell downloads. There are some big names in
the charts, including Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, Johnny Cash, and of course,
Pete Townshend. There are also plenty of nobodies who suddenly discovered
the site and did very well with an uploaded demo.
This particular fan has captured the songs played on "In the Attic" and put
them together in a radio station. It appears he's limiting the songs to
what the Townshend gang plays on the Attic show, but presumably this will
expand when they go on tour. The big drawback I see compared to Rapidshare
or YouSendIt is that the IAC songs don't normally include video. However,
for people who have slow connections, this is probably a benefit.
Incidently, there's just been a fuss on one Wholist about whether Pete ought
to be considered an "independent artist" and whether he's abusing his
position to put his songs up there and take space away from musicians who
really need the exposure--a good topic for discussion.
If you'd like to check out the rest of the site, here's the home page URL.
