Who rock the Generations

SIXTIES rockers THE WHO proved they have still got
what it takes to wow the crowd at Sunday's Hard Rock
Café Hyde Park Calling festival.

The greying stars, who have been performing for over
40 years headlined the event a year after the day they
wowed fans at Live 8.

Support acts OCEAN COLOUR SCENE, THE ZUTONS and
RAZORLIGHT also put on a fine show in the soaring
temperatures.

Liverpudlian chart-climbers The Zutons were a
particular favourite, especially with their catchy
single Valerie.

And Brit band Razorlight had the girls in the crowd
sweating as singer Johnny Borrell stripped off his top
and paraded around in his tight white jeans.

But the oldies had a definite edge over their younger
support acts.

Crashing seamlessly through their repertoire of soft
ballads and harder rock anthems, the group had the
audience – made up of young and old - rocking together
as the sun set over the park.

Singer Roger Daltrey darted around like a true legend
while guitarist Pete Townsend’s power chords and
arm-swinging ‘windmills’ thrilled the thousands
watching, who sang along to classics like Pinball
Wizard and My Generation.

Roger told the audience: "It's great to see so many
young faces here appreciate our music - and some old
ones too."

And on the way The Who strutted their stuff, they'll
be wowing the generations for years to come.

The stars speak

Here is what some of the acts playing had to say, as
told to Virgin Radio:

"I have nothing but respect for Roger Daltrey, he is
one of my favourite singers."

JOHNNY BORRELL, RAZORLIGHT

"I want to meet Rger Daltrey, so I can get some free
trout fishing in on his trout farm, so Roger if you’re
listening this is Manny from Primal Scream and I’m a
dab hand at the drive fly, get me down to your gaff
and we’ll do a bit of fishing."

GARY MOUNFIELD, PRIMAL SCREAM

"I think the gigs are where you get the enjoyment,
because you see how many people have come to see you
and how many people know the words and how many people
are going for it, that’s when you realise you are
doing something good."
