Flaming Lips Get Zipped With Pete Townshend
Posted Aug 18th 2006 11:43AM by Jolie Lash

It's been a monumental summer for the Flaming Lips.
Not only did the Oklahomans make their debut
performance at the Hollywood Bowl last month, but they
recently met and jammed with one of their idols.

"We were in England and opened up for the Who at
Leeds," bassist Michael Ivins enthused to AOL Music.
"We've actually gotten to meet quite a few of our
heroes, but I think Pete Townshend was the one that
was like, 'Whoa, this is weird.' For a lot of it, my
brain and mouth couldn't work together."

The band, pictured with Townshend (and manager Scott
Booker on the left), joined the Who's legendary
guitarist backstage at the event for an emotional,
slowed-down version of 'Can't Explain' that is
currently playing on IntheAttic.TV.

Spending time with Townshend put the Lips' career in
perspective, Ivins says. "He seems like a really nice
guy, and it seems like he still has weird ideas.
That's hopefully what we could aspire to."
