Gig of a lifetime: Eddie Vedder
(Filed: 27/04/2006)

Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam, talks to Andrew Perry
about seeing the Who at San Diego Sports Arena, 1980

For my money, the Who were probably the greatest live
band ever. I never got to see them with Keith Moon: I
saw them right after that period. It was June 18,
1980, in the first round of shows with Kenney Jones on
drums.

I'd been listening to them non-stop for two or three
years. By then, they'd been going for 15 years or so,
with this incredible encyclopaedia of songs and
recordings and performances, from the first stuff on
Brunswick, with My Generation, and the R&B stuff,
right through to Who's Next, then Quadrophenia, Who
Are You
They totally had me, really, from the moment
they showed up.

My adolescent heart couldn't comprehend that that was
Pete Townshend and Daltrey and Entwistle. They
could've played like crap, and I'm sure I would've
loved it. I knew every song, but they were great - the
solos, everything.

They weren't just enigmatic; there was this energy
that they put out. I listen back to bootlegs from
around then, and I think it was a powerful time for
them. After Keith's passing, I think they came out
with something to prove. That year, Pete had put out
his solo record, Empty Glass, so it felt as if they
were doing a lot, still really vital.

I've talked to them about it subsequently, and to
Bobby Pridden, who's worked for them for ever, and he
agrees - the first year or two with Kenney, they were
smokin'.
