You have copyright to the music as soon as it's recorded in any way: 
writing, sound recording, etc.   If you have to go to court about some 
infringement and you didn't protect the song in some way, then you'd have to 
call witnesses who could verify you wrote this about so and so date, etc.  
Otherwise there's no problem.  You can file for an official U.S. copyright 
at any time.
