Pop Festival redux for Monterey?

The Monterey Pop Festival might resurface at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area
next year.

The Carmel Media Corp. recently paid a $5,000 deposit to reserve the park
for a Monterey Pop Festival-style concert on Memorial Day weekend next year,
according to a spokeswoman for the Monterey County Parks Department.

No details were immediately available, however.

The Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967 at the Monterey Fairgrounds is a
landmark of rock 'n' roll history, featuring performers such as Jimi
Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, The Who, Otis Redding and Jefferson
Airplane. It was the first large-scale rock festival, preceding Woodstock.

Lavonne Chin, special events manager for the county-operated park, said the
application process must be followed up with intense planning and approval
from the Monterey County Board of Supervisors.

"Nothing has been approved or negotiated," Chin said.

Representatives of Carmel Media Corp. could not be reached Friday.
