Showtime has slated a documentary about the long-awaited release of "Smile,"
the shelved but ultimately completed album from the Beach Boys' Brian
Wilson, to premiere on the channel in October.

David Leaf (A&E's "Billy Joel (news): In His Own Words") directed "Beautiful
Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile," a chronicling of the events
leading up to the record's worldwide release Sept. 28. LSL Prods. produced
the film in association with Richard Waltzer's Chautauqua Entertainment.

Doc will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of February's first
"Smile" concert in London along with interviews with Wilson, Burt Bacharach
(news), Jimmy Webb (news), George Martin, Roger Daltrey (news), Elvis
Costello (news), Jeff Bridges (news) and Rob Reiner.

"Smile" is "among history's great unfinished works, and this extraordinary
documentary will explain why," Showtime entertainment topper Robert
Greenblatt said. "Music fans, as well as the average viewer, will all be
able to relate to the story of this remarkable record's birth, demise and
triumphant return to life."

Album was intended to be the follow-up to the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," but
was shelved on account of Wilson's growing depression. Last year, Wilson
regrouped with Van Dyke Parks to finish the record.
