Off and on subject

Off subject but important: Five years in Iraq or 1,825 days since
'Shock and Awe' lit up the skies in Baghdad. Since then we have
suffered 4,000 military deaths, 29,000 military wounded, and
$342 mill per day in costs.
ON subject and also important: It’s sure been an exciting year. But
good
may not be good enough since we are maybe not quite up to the
hype or our anticipation.
I had the good fortune to watch Sat. night’s game in person since
my in-laws live just outside The Big Easy and then replayed the
game tape yesterday, And all I heard on the tape was Donny M.
(quickly catching Tommy in the Homer category), the usually fair
Gorman, and good old Tommy (‘nuff said) constantly attempting
to diss Chris Paul as an MVP finalist over our own beloved Garnett.
I kept hearing them beat the drum that Rondo was
actually outplaying MVP candidate Chris Paul. Yet Paul
and lowly sub PG Pargo combined to record 12 of
20 shooting, 34 pts, 5 threes, and 13 assists to beat
us along with our 20 turnovers. So how well did Rondo
actually do?
At best Rondo is a split-personality player from quarter to
quarter, half to half, and game to game. Is Rondo now the
best finisher in the league as Donny M. suggested Sat.
night? Hard to believe.
What I saw was Chris Paul come through like a champ when
it counted in the final minutes while Rondo did not and our
best player Garnettt as usual was nowhere to be found in the
final minutes. Some players live for the last shot while others
avoid taking it. Garnett has never been one to put himself on
the line with a final or penultimate shot.
Sure Garnett has made all the difference to us and certainly
we owe at least 40% of our success to him, 25% to
defensive coach Thibodeau, 20% to Pierce, and 15% to
Ray Allen and our bench. But during his career Garnett has
historically never been willing to put himself on the line
in the final minutes, which I find strange. But this Garnett
flaw could well rear its ugly head in close finals series
against either Detroit in the East or the WD champion.
I don’t really mean to diss Rondo, I like him. In the future
he’ll be a very good, consistent PG. But he’s not there yet no
matter how much other teams fall off from guarding him
and our local announcers hype him. And Cassell’s game
doesn’t so far seem to fit our style or purpose.
Just one listers opinion.
Joe
