Here's one guys take on the Cassell deal.

Big Picture: Sam's scam
By Matt Buser (Yahoo sports)

Was anyone else disappointed to hear that the Clippers finally caved and
bought out Sam Cassell on Thursday? He so desperately wanted to leave the Clippers
– at 19-36, the 12th seed in the Western Conference – and join the Celtics –
at 44-12, tops in the East and the best record in the NBA – and you certainly
can't fault him for that. What bothered me was his blabbering on about
wanting the team to “treat him fairly” in the buy-out situation that has been
festering for the past few weeks.

The Clippers were willing to waive him if he'd have agreed to walk away from
$2.1 million still owed him on his current contract. He signed a two-year,
$13-million dollar contract after averaging 17.2 points and 6.3 assists in
2005-06, a year in which the Clippers also advanced to the Western Conference
semi-finals. In the two seasons since signing the deal, he's averaged 12.5 points
and 4.7 assists, while missing 41 of 137 games with various injuries.

“I'm not doing it,” said Cassell in reference to walking away from what was
left of his deal so that he could immediately go sign another. “I know for a
fact I've done tremendous things for this organization. I've helped this
organization have respectability in the city of L.A. – at least for a year – where
everybody was walking around with their chests out and they can't tell me I
didn't.”

Does anyone else think that roughly $11 million for 1.5 years of mediocrity –
on the occasions that he wasn't inactive – was a fair trade for one year of
walking around with your chest out? I guess you can't blame the Clippers for
wanting to finally end this unfortunate situation, but it seems that Cassell
could have gone about things differently, with both parties ultimately getting
fair treatment.
