First,. what popularity? Until this year he was still regularly 
getting boo'd at the Gahden just for existing even before he did 
something wrong (sorry, but this really pisses me off when they do 
this with any Cs player, especially with one like Scal who you know 
will give you something to boo legitimately if you just wait a few 
minutes). They may not have showed it on TV but I was there.

The cheers this year wouldn't be happening if they weren't winning or 
if Scal was getting and screwing up a lot of minutes. But really, I 
think they're the sort of I'm enjoying myself cheers for someone 
offering hard working comic relief rather than this guy is our hero 
cheers. Boston fans in all sports have always cheered for someone who 
seemed to be trying hard, including plenty of others who could try 
until they turned purple but still would look like a misfit out there.

Yeah, some of it is probably that he's someone the average middle 
class working stiff can relate to better for their own wish 
fulfillment than a talented greyhound like Garnett or Rondo - but I 
think it's more because of physical build and limited skills than 
skin color. I've never bought into this whole Boston fans only cheer 
for white players who look like them because who the hell look like 
me out there on the court? And I'm not the only female fan...
