I didn't set this up properly, but the following is from Kim, as you know, and it's one of the best statements on intensity and defense I've seen. Growing up I played offense and learned to dribble and shoot well enough; later, in pick-up games as a 30 something, I discovered the joy of defense. This year's team seems to have it.
I posted elsewhere about something I'd been
trying to explain to someone the other day about why I LOVED being a
defensive player and got a rush from that I never got from scoring.
Defense is about imposing your will on others. People think offense
is, but defense is really more about that. You can score accidentally
or as part of the flow or simply on having more talent like huge
hops, but good defense is all about stronger will backing
intelligently applied effort. And when you can not only do it but see
its effect on the other team / players (e.g. the look in their eyes
when you know you're going to stop them, they know you're going to
stop them and they also know there's nothing they can do about it to
the simple madness of frustration that lead Cassell to punch Rondo.
Pure magic... find a way to bottle that feeling and you'd never look at drugs)
