The simple answer might be that he treated his sneakers like he did passes in the paint. From Peter May's notes:

Vitaly Potapenko's first
serious stint at playing overseas didn't last long. The former Celtics
center, who turns 33 next month, decided to sign with Estudiantes in
Madrid after no NBA team expressed much interest in him. After six
games (and two-a-day practices on non-game days), Potapenko had had
enough. According to a friend, Potapenko took off his sneakers and left
them in the parking lot near the building where the team practiced. He
stayed in Madrid for a few days before leaving for Miami. Potapenko is
fresh if nothing else. He played in only three games for the Sacramento Kings last year"
