Reports: Grizz to send Gasol to Lakers for Brown
ESPN.com news services
_Memphis Grizzlies_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=mem)
center _Pau Gasol_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3513)
may be joining the _Los Angeles Lakers_
(http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=lal) shortly, according to media reports in Los Angeles and Memphis.
The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported Friday on its Web site that the
Grizzlies have dealt Gasol to the Lakers for _Kwame Brown_
(http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3511) , rookie guard _Javaris Crittenton_
(http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=4297) and first-round
draft picks in 2008 and 2010.
The Los Angeles Times, on its Web site, reported that the Lakers are in
negotiations to send Brown, Crittendon and draft picks to Memphis for Gasol.
It is also believed that the Lakers would need to arrange a sign-and-trade
for _Aaron McKie,_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=2640)
who is not currently playing in NBA, to make the salary cap math work for
the deal.
According to the Commercial Appeal, the Grizzlies decided to move ahead with
trading Gasol because the team felt it could not longer move ahead with him
off or on the court -- and that the acquisition of Brown, who is earning
$9,075,000 in the last year of his contract, would provide the franchise salary
cap relief.
The Commercial Appeal also reported that the Grizzlies are sending _Stromile
Swift_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3401) to the
_New Jersey Nets_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=njn) for
center _Jason Collins_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3530)
. The Grizzlies and Nets have been discussing that deal for the past week
and expect to finalize it on Monday, according to the report.
Swift met with Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni and general manager Chris
Wallace on Friday, was sent home and did not practice with the team and will not
play in Saturday's game against Utah, the newspaper reported.
ESPN.com NBA writer Marc Stein contributed to this report.
