There's also the factor of who is on the team.? When Malone and Payton came to LA (and remember that Malone was hurt during the playoffs), they still had to deal with two of the biggest egos in the game at their peak in Shaq and Kobe.? Garnett, Pierce, and Allen, on the other hand, are very much all on the same page here:? they want a title, and I don't worry about egos getting in the way.? The rest of the players are either youngsters (Rondo, Powe, Perk) or savvy veterans (Cassell, House, Posey) who know their roles and are happy to play them.? Now that I think of it, Payton may have been a guy who was clearly on the downside of his career, but whose ego had yet to begins its decline.? maybe...

I generally tend to agree, but Miami certainly did it.
And even though Detroit has been together forever, and
been one of the league's best teams for the better
part of a decade, they've "only" been to the Finals
twice and only won one title.
As for mental toughness, I no longer worry about that
with this team. They are peaking at the right time,
from the Big 3 to guys like Posey, Powe and House. If
they don't make it to the Finals, it will more likely
be because of the Xs and Os things Roy talked about
(e.g. Garnett relying too much on his midrange
jumper).
>> It's rare for teams to win the rings with a
completely new lineup compared to last year.
