no fear

The areas of concern are point guard -- both Rondo and the lack of a
backup -- and the other frontcourt spot alongside KG. I worry more about
the PG. If ever a team needed a floor general who could get the ball to
the right people at the right time, this team needs it. Rondo may very
well be a quality starting PG in time, but time is one thing the Celtics
don't have. They have this year and next year to get it done. After
that, it's a slow slide to mediocrity.

I love Big Baby also, but remember that playing in the regular rotation,
he'd be asked to do all the dirty work things -- defend, rebound, etc.
His strengths right now are with the ball in his hands. Every decision
has to be made with the consideration of how it fits with KG, Pierce and
Ray Allen. Big Baby, for all his talent, probably isn't the best fit
alongside those guys just yet. Of course, I don't really like Powe's
game at all and Scal is doing his best to make me look like an idiot for
ever suggesting he should be starting. I'm not giving up on that one,
though. If he'd just understand that he shouldn't be taking the first
open shot he sees -- that he should be an end-of-shot-clock option only
-- I still think Scal could fit with that group.

Anyway, it's early. We have to expect some growing pains with all the
new faces. Maybe some of this will shake out as the season goes along.
If not, you know Ainge will be shopping at the deadline. Rondo would be
an attractive piece for a young team seeking a PG. And I still wouldn't
be shocked to see something happen with Damon Stoudamire. That just
seems like a natural fit. We'll see.

I watched last night's game against the Nets and feel just fine about
the bench. I can't say whether Perk will be ready or not, but I think
the bench is. Time to take a deep breath, Celts' fans.

Unmentioned in a previous post was the work of Glen Davis last night.
He scored, rebounded, blocked shots, passed well, took charges and
elevated the team. If it weren't for our pre-conceived notions about
him, we would be comparing him to Big Al. His bulk and ability would
make him a good counterpart to KG when needed. He's not a normal
rookie.

Eddie House again showed how he can be an effective scorer in spots.
He's not expected to be much more than that.

Posey is hitting his stride, especially with the threes. His presence
off the bench means defense and few mistakes.

And, lest we forget, there's Tony. Don't forget last year. We
bemoaned his ball handling miscues, his ball hogging tendencies, his
average (at best) shooting--and then he put it together for an excellent
string of games. The turnovers and goofy plays were minimized and he
fit in well. I'm one (maybe the only one) who thinks he can give us
some good minutes in reserve to Rondo. Tony will deliver the great
floor game and about 50% shooting, plus the fire, before long.

So, that's the bench I see. They don't need to perform like all-stars
in pre-season (where they get excessive minutes). They just need to
play their ten to fifteen minutes within the team concept.

That is not to say we don't need another big. We do. But all the
other teams have weak spots, too. No fear. Gene
