The real question is what's my Poster Efficiency Rating?

How can you have occasional chronic halitosis?

By definition chronic anything is persistent and lasting...

Hopefully you know I'm only joking...

Looking forward to a fruitful and fun season, full of occasionally
chronic win streaks.

Subject: The real question is what's my Poster Efficiency Rating?

Player Efficiency Ratings? Is that like Gallup Exit Polls? Or maybe the
famous Adjusted Earned Income?

The problem with so-called "efficiency ratings" is that they can best be
inflated by doing nothing. Don't turn the ball over because you don't
touch it? Great efficiency!

High completion percentage because you only shoot twice a game? Awesome
efficiency man!

And let's not even get into what the sample size is? The minute and a
half he played last week? All of last year? Career?

I'm not saying Tony isn't a nice player. He's a nice player. Really, he
is. Fourth best player on the team? I don't know about that. What is the
basis for the rating? He's had a stretch of maybe 12 games (out of how
many total available over his career?) where he was transforming into a
consistent defender and scorer. Other than that he's been hurt (a lot)
and played with sporadic consistency his entire career - yet somehow
that's a high player efficiency rating???????????? This is the same
logic of "Clay Bucholz should start game 1 of the ALCS". Why? "Because
he threw a no-hitter."

Notice no mention of context, duration of time in the major leagues, or
any other relevant analysis - just a decision based on one single
limited statistic.

Statistics can be shaped and formed into anything your heart desires. If
I set out to do so I could make a statistic stating the I am the best
NBA player to have ever played (despite the fact I've 1. Never set foot
on an NBA court as a player and 2. Am slow of foot, a terrible shooter,
can't jump, bad defender, and occasionally suffer from chronic
halitosis).

We'll call it the Attuned Competency Co-efficency Rating. It'll have
lots of formulas and bar charts and maybe even a powerpoint
presentation. It'll be totally worthless, but it will sound scientific.

Another person with some basketball IQ, John Hollinger, just came out
with his Player Efficiency Ratings and Posey came in with a sterling
10.53 PER (just below Kendrick Perkins who's at 10.96) while Tony Allen
came in at 15.15, good for 4th best on the
team, after KG, Paul and Ray, respectively. - Ubi
