I don't think there's a team in either conference that
the Celtics, on any given night, could not beat. And
the only Eastern team I think could really give us
trouble in a 7-game series is Detroit, because of
their length, depth, toughness, shooting and defense.
I was thinking last night that if I were playing the
Celtics, I'd doubleteam KG all night, because his
rebounding and D seem to be setting the table for
everything else. Then I'd put my best perimeter
defender on Allen, because he's making things so much
easier for Pierce. You barely even have to worry about
defending Perkins and Rondo, of course. So if you can
neutralize (or at least slow down) Garnett and Allen,
then you can force Pierce to beat you. Even though
Paul is playing out of his mind right now and looks to
be in the best shape I've seen for a long time, I
suspect he still lacks mental toughness and could
revert to bad habits if Garnett and Allen can be taken
out of the game.
But then I realized that Ainge has designed this team
so cleverly that if a team were to try to put this
plan in place, you could sub Posey and House for
Perkins and Rondo, and there would be two guys who
would just kill you for loading up your defense on
Garnett and Allen. Again, as long as everybody stays
healthy over the course of a long season, I just can't
see us not making the ECF, at the least.
