Since the Master P incentive laden contract for Ricky Williams (Dolphins
running back and resident NFL Pothead) was universally panned no other
agent has been dumb enough to tie actual performance into player's
contracts in a significant way; meaning essentially once that contract
is signed said player could conceivably just stand under one basket or
the other during any court time and they would still have to pay him.
Radical example as that would happen exactly once before the guy got
benched, but you get paid there too.

 

Pro sports is one of the few business areas left (there are others out
there) in which you can pay someone the same rate regardless of
productivity - so yes, internal motivation from co-workers is likely the
only methodology in which to try and increase production.
