The only problem with drafting a project like Yi is that it makes Pierce
less valuable to the Celtics in relation to other teams (his value would
be greater on a contending team than a team going "nowhere fast").
If we were to roll the dice with Yi Dingaling (which I really hope we
don't), and danny keeps Pierce, we will have essentially the same 24 win
team as last year except maybe with better injury luck so we would have
a 30-32 win team instead (the assumption being yi is nowhere near ready
to contribute).
Danny can not gamble on a non-immediate term impact player at #5 unless
he is willing to deal Pierce (who will likely demand a trade if they
simply add Yi and rebuild).
As I see it ainge can either:
1. Trade Pierce for young talent, draft dingaling, and rebuild around
the young talent he acquires for pierce, al, and dinagling.
2. Trade the #5 pick and Gerald (who may have some mkt value) plus a
combination of all non-al Jefferson players and maybe even more draft
picks for a top impact player (not sure that is enough to get garnett or
gasol, but worth trying). Mortgaging the future a bit by giving up
potentially more than one pick, but Pierce/Al/+ proven star is good
enough in the East with some luck.
3. Trade Al for Garnett (with others involved in the trade, I am
guessing something involving Al could get garnett) and keep #5 and thus
make a run for it over a 3-4 year period with garnett, pierce, rondo,
and the #5 pick (which would have to be a non-project, preferably corey
brewer).
Of course, knowing danny he will take the least logical and use option
#4 which is draft a project while doing nothing else and thus returning
our 24 win team with a bench player for the future.

Unless Danny trades the pick, we're going to have a
chance to draft either Yi, Horford or Brandan Wright
-perhaps even more than one of them. Any of the three
would be just fine, in my opinion. This team is going
nowhere fast, so why not invest in some frontcourt
help that might pay off down the road?
If Ainge does trade the pick, I hope and pray it will
be for some quality big man help (eg Gasol or J.
O'Neal). I don't necessarily expect that to happen,
though.
