value of picks

The interesting thing is that of my examples, only the Clippers and
Brand got the best of the deal. Chris Paul is better than Pierce (that
was the deal that almost happened) and Pau Gasol is better than Shareef.
You have to be careful.

I think that is even more true this year. Everyone is so focused on Oden
and Durant -- for good reason -- that the other players are seen as
mediocre draft fodder. I don't think that's the case at all. I think
there are a lot of very good players in this draft. I'd hate to throw a
pick away just because it wasn't Oden or Durant, then regret it a year
from now.

agree with you on this, mark. you never know who teams
have a gleam in their eye about, e.g. tyson chandler
for elton brand.

in any case, would love to have the 1 or 2 pick, but
would be happy adding brewer with the 3. we could use
his savvy, his enthusiam, toughness, length and his
experience as a winner. really nice package, i think.

You'd be surprised what that pick could fetch. The No.
3 pick a few
years ago almost fetched Paul Pierce (and would have,
if Chris
Wallace's
agent hadn't opened his big mouth). A high pick landed
Elton Brand. A
high pick landed Shareef Abdur Rahim (back when he was
considered a
stud).

Those high picks have value.

Mark
