That ship has sailed indeed

You'd be surprised what that pick could fetch. The No. 3 pick a few
years ago almost fetched Paul Pierce (and would have, if Chris Wallace's
agent hadn't opened his big mouth). A high pick landed Elton Brand. A
high pick landed Shareef Abdur Rahim (back when he was considered a
stud).

Those high picks have value.

You're absolutely right. It's going to take this year's pick and MORE.
Maybe
MUCH more. Definitely next years' #1 as a sweetener, and then some mix
of
the following: Green, Gomes, West, Perkins, or even Rondo. If Ratliff's
deal
evens the money so be it, but maybe it doesn't - that piece is basically
immaterial.

That's what it would take minimum to get someone back that is either a
near
all-star or "sometimes an all-star, but not perennially" type guy. It's
not
going to get a perennial all-star level player - sorry - and that will
mean
Pierce will still be the number one guy - this would be a complimentary
piece guy merely for the sake of getting rid of some youth. I used to
think
when all we heard was Memphis was doing a fire sale for Gasol, but I
think
that ship sailed and they're planning on pairing him with Oden or Durant
next year and see how it goes before the trade deadline.

-------------------------
What "polished and sure impact veteran" can we get for a 3-5 pick? No
one
seems to have an answer for that.
This is important because I keep reading this a lot. There is an
expectation that the team can translate a 3-5 pick into a polished
veteran,
but is that realistic? If it's not, then aren't you simply setting the
team
up for another failure?

Someone tossed out the name of Caron Butler earlier, but that's just not
going to happen. The Wizards are not going to give up one of their best
players for a rookie. - Asterix
