I dunno, Gene. Billups is sure to want a max deal, and
the best thing both for him and for Detroit is to do a
sign-and-trade. Ratliff's deal might not be
unattractive to Detroit since it will only have one
more year on it. If we could interest them in a couple
of our young guards (Green? West? maybe even
Telfair?), they might figure it's better than letting
him walk for nothing.
Of course, this assumes that
a) they don't get better sign-and-trade offers
b) Billups would consider coming back to Boston
c) any such sign-and-trade for a max contract wouldn't
better be used trying to obtain somebody like, say,
Gasol.
I'll tell you one thing: if the Cs luck into Oden or
Durant and can swing a blockbuster deal for a Billups
or Gasol using picks, younguns and Ratliff's salary as
leverage, Boston could very quickly see the kind of
turnaround Golden State did after the Pacers trade.
