2 Things that could make Doc a good coach

Even with his lack of imagination, utter slowness to
recognize the need to change his scheme, inability to
make in-game changes, and general forgetfulness, Doc
Rivers could become a good (i.e., plus .500) coach if
two things happen.

First, he needs to continue to play Delonte at the
two. I love his explanation in today's paper when he
said that he wanted to go to it earlier in the season
but that Delonte wasn't ready for it. Who cares
whether he was ready? Regardless of Delonte's
readiness, the entire team benefits from his presence
at the two, in terms of offense execution and the fact
that all of a sudden everyone on the team has a
defined role they are able to fulfill (Telfair has
been playing great lately now that his role has been
defined). Who ever heard of coddling players to the
detriment of the team? Apparently, when it involves
Delonte, Doc is ready to do just that.

One thing that everyone--Delonte and Doc
included--must realize is that Delonte is not going to
get the same numbers at the 2 that he was able to get
at the 1. He won't have the ball in his hands as
much (thank god) and his overinflated assist and point
numbers will suffer. In exchange, the team will have
better offensive flow and Delonte will get his numbers
in the regular flow of offense and not in opposition
to that flow. So, he has lesser numbers, but the team
benefits as a whole. Sounds good, huh? I'm glad
Delonte's finally ready for it. Only took 3/4ths of
the season to figure out something that everyone else
took as readily apparent.

The other thing that needs to happen is getting Durant
or Oden in the draft. This is pretty much beyond
anyone's control, but if Doc makes just one adjustment
and we get lucky, he will become, pretty much
overnight, a good coach. And it's my suspicion that
the front office is going to give him that chance and
let him coach next year. One good decision and one
lucky bounce of the ping pong ball and we're going to
be a very good team and Doc gets to keep his job.
