I don't necessarily agree. Perhaps this gets too much into the entire "best
sports city" argument, national versus regional recognition, etc, but take
this year's championship winners - given its low ratings, the poor quality
of one opponent, do you think this championship stacks up memory/legacy-wise
to others?

I think you could argue that more then anything it solidifies Duncan as the
impact player of this decade, but I don't know if carries much more then
that. Let's take the Gary Payton and Antoine Walker examples - now for them
personally - hell yeah you're dead on that it doesn't matter how, just that
they got the " big ring" - but as an entire legacy to Payton's career for
example is he best remembered for his championship year? I don't think so.
He's already faded away against the likes of Shaq and Dwayne Wade's legacy
regarding that championship in the eyes of history. They're remembered as
what got the Heat a trophy - Gary Payton is an afterthought (if that).

And perhaps that's where we disagree - personal legacy versus historical
legacy. I view them as vastly different and not equally powerful, but maybe
to others they are.

The path that gives him a big ring will be remembered the longest. Period.
