Totally invalid comparison and, crafted more to pull on heartstrings
--oooooooh, Larry Legend--then to examine the issue in term of reality in the here
and now.
BTW wasn't the last two years of Bird basically a struggle through the
season then totally run out of gas by the playoffs because of his back? Is that
the comparison you want to make with KG? That his last two years are painful to
watch as a great player hangs on just a little too long and his body can't
cash the checks his superior mental talents wrote -- warrior-like and all, but
ultimately kind've sad to see the decline.
The bottom line remains - you're either for Garnett and a two or three year
stint where we're pretty good, but all in all not likely championship material
before being forced to wait another couple years to blow it all up and start
from scratch waiting for the totally inflexible contracts of Pierce and
Garnett to run out. During that time unable to sign anyone to surround them with
other then draft picks, your own players, and the exemption (Ainge's oh so
strong point - sarcasm implied). Oh, and one last thing - you all realize
Garnett can opt out soon right - we might only get him for even shorter time
before he goes to a real contender (Phoenix?) for his ring on his own accord.
or
Select the #5 pick in a loaded draft to pair with a low post threat (KG is a
jump shooter folks) and Pierce, with the contracts of Ratliff and Wally going
away soon, or tradeable assets as expiring/matching contracts, probably make
maybe one round less in the playoffs then with KG (7th or 8th spot versus
4th or 5th) and remain flexible for further moves for the next three or four
years?
Now if I'm a fan I go with option B, but if I'm an owner then I go with
option A to put fannies in the seats and make nice tv/radio appearances spouting
off how this will make us "instant contenders" and sell some season tickets
quick. Also to if I'm Ainge/Rivers and know I'm on the hot seat I have to do
option A my career depends on the "sure thing" of a playoff spot.

Would you give up Big Al, Gerald, the #5 pick, etc. for Larry Legend?
