Truth in Advertising

There are rumors out there that Minnesota and Phoenix are talking about
a Garnett trade. It could very well be posturing. Maybe the Celtics are
trying to get in there as a third team? Something sending Amare and
others to Boston, Al and the rest of that package to Minny and Garnett
to Phoenix?

It could also be a Minnesota leak that is being used to drive up the
value of Garnett.

rumor what it
is - an all or nothing gamble. That's what (as reported) this deal would
be;
a last ditch shot to leap ahead in a weak East for the next 1-2 years.
For
those parched with thirst for success maybe that's exactly what they
want -
the time for patience is over no matter what the price.
I'm more with Mr. Berry in that the price is just too steep. Why?
Because we
go from being too young to too old in a hurry (basically, overnight).
Ideally, you want your NBA team to have veteran all-stars (despite the
mis-use of the term in these parts it is a truism when looking at the
full
league spectrum), a mix of vet and rookie contract role players and
(again
this is ideally) at least one player on your rookie scale that's about
to
break into that all-star ceiling.
That setup would afford you the ability to continue to stay competitive
over
a long haul (at least in my thick head). Now reality is more that teams
get
lucky in the draft (San Antonio) or strike while the iron is hot and get
a
vet all-star in trade (Phoenix) then load up on as many veterans looking
"for their ring" types willing to play for a little less money so they
can
be fit reasonably into the convoluted NBA cap structure, but given their
druthers I'd bet most teams would subscribe to the "reload" versus
"rebuild"
theory if they could still continue to be competitive.
So while the Celtics get the veteran all-stars (Pierce/Garnett) portion
they
lose all of the rookie scale "stars in waiting" - ALL OF THEM - not just
Jefferson, not just Green, but ALSO the #5 pick in a loaded draft. So
instead of Minnesota taking long shot they have not one, not two, but
three
chances for recouping their loss while the Celtics get the one shot
which to
them means title or bust with a known quantity. And for those that would
argue "What about Delonte? What About Perk? What about Rondo?" The case
for
Rondo being a star can be argued - I'll concede there, but Perk, Gomes
and
Delonte are not all-stars - and never will be - and you HAVE to have
all-stars for this to work. (BTW Once (if) Tony Allen comes back and
people
actually see him playing NBA basketball we can debate his future, but
until
then he's off the table.)
If the Cs could keep just ONE aspect to retain some future I think it
would
be much more palatable a scenario - even if it's Green the least likely
to
break out at least there remains a little future thinking instead of a
mortgage it all now mentality.
