Well, it's done and I think we gave up too much, considering that we had McHale over a barrel and could have pinched him--rather than opening up the candy store to him. I think Al plus Gerald plus a choice would have done it, but I'm not there to really know. Losing Al and Ryan may be mitigated by the contributions of Davis and Wallace; we'll see. Two ideas:
We gave up spot up shooters and we'll need them. If Doc can manage rotations (any confidence there?) and keep an all-star or two on the court, then we'll need a Gomes-like shooter and a Green-like shooter to make defenses pay. We clearly have two players in Pierce and Garnett who must be double-teamed or they will drive and score. Do we have the shooters to camp in the corner and keep the offense flowing?
Second, we should win it all. San Antonio is doing a courageous job of hiding their weaknesses now. The easy finals made them look better than they are. Duncan needs the two and three men to be at their best and I'm not convinced Ginobili can continue that. The rest of their group is mediocre and I conclude they are ripe for the taking. A muscle team can do it. Detroit would have done it, imo, except they imploded. The future of the West is more Phoenix and later Portland, and we can now stand with them. In fact, I daresay we should be the favorite every time we step on the court this year. Only Doc stands in our way now. Cheers, Gene
