Apparently, the ref's name...now apparently revealed to be Tim
Donaghy...came up NOT in an investigation by the Nevada gaming
commission, but in an ongoing investigation in New York into
organized crime. In fact, according to people like Jay Kornegay, the
Executive Director of sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton, as
reported by ESPN.com, there wasn't so much as a whisper about this
until the story broke this morning. In fact, nobody at the Nevada
Gaming Commission seems to have been contacted at all during the
investigation, which has reportedly been ongoing for over a year.
Donaghy himself is described as "recently resigned", but there's been
zero details on exactly when and why. This leads me to speculate
that Donaghy knew what was coming, perhaps had already been
approached by the FBI, and had a closed door meeting with
someone--possibly even David Stern--during which he was told to
quietly resign. This would give Stern an ace to play when the story
broke--he got Donaghy out of the League as soon as he knew what was
going on, but kept it quiet for the sake of the ongoing
investigation. Keep in mind, though that i am only speculating,
which is a fancy way of saying "guessing", in the absence of hard facts.
You might recall Donaghy was the ref who was threatened by Rasheed
Wallace back in 2003, drawing a seven game suspension.
