a bird in the hand . . .

I have not seen the games. All I know about Wallace comes from print. Yet, he sounds like a full-plumaged bird, one who knows the game and plays it with gusto--rebounding and blocking shots alongside real defense. He may or may not see time in the D league; he may or may not find instant pt, but he represents the proverbial bird in the hand. Free agents or sign and trades haven't come easily to this squad. The pickings are slim, suspect, and expensive. Wallace represents short money for a full size defender, and he may replace two players because of his well-rounded game. That's a bargain.

Well, and it's all for future reference. I don't place much hope or trust in who we might pick up from here on this summer. It's possible, and with the Ratliff chip plus Gomes?, we could land someone. But 28 other teams want the good ones, too, and not a few of them are closer to the gold ring than we are. So, relax and see what the young man can do. At least, he replaces A. Ray and his contract; he may also clear out the logjam at backup SF. Gene
