I don't expect Boston to try to make a deal for
Kirilenko, or for any other max-salary type. Doing so
will almost ensure our losing Al Jefferson when he
becomes a free agent next summer. So if you're going
to swap Theo's expiring deal for a third max salary,
you have to make damn sure it's somebody who will put
you in an excellent position to win a title THIS YEAR.

Does a lineup of Rondo, Pierce, Allen, Kirilenko and
Jefferson, backed up by Perkins, Tony, Gomes, Green
and possibly Telfair, get you to the Finals past
Cleveland, Miami, Detroit, Chicago et al? Mayyy-be.
For my money, though, if we're gonna let Big Al walk
in '08, it's gotta be a can't-miss deal; that's why
the only guy I'm currently in favor of getting (absent
Garnett, who I think is unattainable under the cap)
would be Gasol. Gasol added to our current lineup
would be unstoppable; even if Jefferson left next
summer, a core of Pierce, Allen and Gasol would keep
us in position to compete for a title for another
couple three years. 

I'd more likely expect us to try to pick up a
mid-level FA or do a small trade for somebody like
Anthony Johnson or Tyronn Lue. If Ratliff can play and
Big Baby can contribute - both big ifs - we should
have enough frontcourt muscle to complement our
perimeter game. Otherwise, maybe a Malik Allen or
Primoz Brezec could contribute a few minutes off the
bench, though I question whether either of those guys
gives you more than Scalabrine. We may be looking at
the roster as is, at least for the beginning of the
season. 

Actually, I'd take a flyer on Jamaal Magloire, if he'd
come here for short money. But he'll probably get
offers from contenders. I'm also unclear how close we
are to the luxury tax, so Wyc et al. might have to
weigh whether a mid-level or even a minimum salary guy
would contribute enough on the court to make it worth
the financial outlay.
