An equally fair question, Mark. I'd think about any of the following.
Steve Blake
Chucky Atkins
Brevin Knight (if Drs confirm it's more likely than not that he can play
65+ games)
Andres Nocioni
Lawrence Roberts
Amir Johnson (an old Ainge favorite who may get lost in the DET shuffle)
Jamaal Magloire
Andray Blatche
Danny Fortson (though here's where a REAL brain doc might be of use)
Mikki Moore
I thought about putting Darko on the list, but my gut tells me that Darko
Mlicic is Croatian for Kwame Brown. He's done nothing to prove that he's
worth anywhere near $8-9M/yr. The Cs aren't looking for upppppside,
they're looking for guys who actually do what they said Scal would do when
he came to Boston (last season's improvement notwithstanding, Brian
Scalabrine is no Bailey Howell).
<<Also, be aware that an MLE signing this year might make it harder to
match an offer that Tony Allen gets next summer...>>
It shouldn't. I firmly believe that lux tax is worth paying to get a team
from the lottery into the playoffs. Doesn't make sense economically to
pay it to get from, say, a 2nd round team to a 3rd round team, and I'm not
even sure it makes economic sense to pay meaningful lux tax go from
contender to champion (though if our owners aren't willing to do that,
they should be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail... but
let's get there first).
Nevertheless, I have to believe that not all of these guys are going to
get the full MLE. There aren't enough chairs when the music stops.
<<not that that's the reason not to spend the MLE, but i'd almost rather
add a BIg and PG via trade (Lue + Sheldon Williams for Scal/Telfair/next
year's #1 is my current desire) and wait to see if T-Al returns to his
former self(s).>>
I'd really rather not give up any more #1s at this point - I've never
liked Lue and I am far from sold on Shelden Williams.
"T-Al"? Yuck. Then again, I'm hardly one to complain. I was driving
around with an "MGOO" license plate for months before I heard my first
A-Rod/J-Lo joke and cringed.
