Consequences

Many of us have noted the apparent failure of our young guys to learn the
basics (like run the break or defend the pick and roll) and questioned their
BB IQ or their character. But, except for Telfair (character) and Green
(IQ), that explanation doesn't hold water. Gomes, West, Powe, Jefferson,
Rondo, and Ray all appear OK in both respects. (Perk gets a pass with his
injury.)

So it's got to be a coaching failure-not so much in teaching as in
enforcing. Operant conditioning says that behavior is shaped and maintained
by its consequences: reward, prompt, frequent, small steps. (Reward can be
negative--i.e., punishment--if necessary.) Seeking to be liked by the
players doesn't cut it; tough taskmasters get respect and results.
