In the end, it makes more sense to compare Danny to contemporary GMs. In
that light, he doesnt fair very well. However, he is not the disaster some
people make him out to me. However, in the end, it comes down to wins and
losses and the losses continue to pile up. He is also hamstrung by his
hubris that he displayed in the early months of his tenure as he blew up the
team he inherited. In his tenure, we have taken steps backward than
forwards. Most GMs cannot get away with this much losing and keep their
jobs.
I agree with those who have raised the question regarding talent acquisition
or team building. If Pierce is a top banana, you are crazy to waste these
years trying to get enough pieces for a complementary star to pair with him
(especially as we have whiffed every time). If he isnt, then you need to
trade him and get really bad and rebuild from scratch or be happy with what
we had before and try to strike gold by mixing and matching veterans in here
to make a run for the finals..
As has been stated numerous times, there really are no other GMs who have
tried to rebuild with mid to late first rounders and second rounders. Ainge
is finding out its hard to develop them (he has the wrong coach), its even
harder with high schoolers, and that all that work doesnt fetch him what he
wants in return.
I dont see us as being closer to the running team he promised - has this
ever looked like the type of ball the Suns and Kings played?
Under Danny's tenure, I see us treading water and...sinking. Either we hit
it big in the lottery or hit it big with a trade this summer or its done. I
prefer letting someone else coach this team next year and someone else
picking the players. Danny hasnt been that good that his drafting acumen
outweighs the damage he has done in his tenure as GM as the Celtics.
