Hard to answer. I remember literally hating to watch Antoine at the bat. He shot us into games and then shot us out of the same games. His style drove me crazy. As I remember, the feeling (mine, anyway) was that such a team had a limit and it had already overachieved by getting to the Eastern finals. We had two stars in name, but Antoine was playing out of position and reducing the team to a two man affair. He was his own worst enemy. By sending him to Dallas and then to Miami, Ainge gave him a golden parachute for sure.
Now, could we have added sufficient help through the draft to make that team better? Maybe, but we won enough to draft lower in the first round. Ironically, only Ainge seems to be able to turn that into a positive. And maybe it would have always been "me and Paul."
My own belief is that Al is better, much better, than Antoine. He does what a pf is supposed to do. Also, we finally have a point guard and a forward in Gomes, plus some capable role players, plus Pierce. I like the team and think we would have developed well this season. Who's to know, but I thought a playoff run and the further development of the young guns would make our future bright. That still could be. If Paul is back (with or without Wally), then we might find out in the next 30 games. Right now I'm pretty down about it because of the pitiful defense I see. Yet I think that's coaching and I hope that's rectified in the off season. I've never really been down on Ainge because his drafting is so good, but I wish he had focused on a few solid vets at the minimum and given us a better vet presence; that, plus the coaching choice in the first place.
So, I would rather see these guys play, lose, and develop because I think we have something special in Al, Rondo, and Gomes, for sure. Green, Tony--perhaps them, too. But there are many more astute observers on the list; I'm more of a fan. Thanks for asking. Gene

Gene,
Can I ask you one question I've been asking myself lately - what do you like
better: watching the ob-ball and 'Toine wiggling in the playoffs or the kids
playing now their tails off just to stay in the game?
Just trying to put everything's happening this season in the right
perspective myself - and still struggling finding the right answer.
