The "cowboy" remark really made me laugh.  I am from Texas, now, but I don't even have a hat.  In fact, I cringe when my fellow locals wear their cowboy hats to a college graduation--and leave them on, inside!  After 40 years in Texas, I still smell of the swamps and bayous of Louisiana.
